As the New York Times reports today,

No blaring country songs. No pink handmade signs. No rousing chants of “Drill, baby, drill." Gov. Sarah Palin abandoned the usual flash of her campaign rallies on Wednesday to deliver her second policy speech as the Republican vice-presidential nominee, an address focused on energy security.

I guess all of the hate's not working so they're trying out talking about real issues. Too bad the layer of hate is so thick that nobody can hear anything else at this point. Too little, too late?

#147: Tailgating the Palin Rally

Republican Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana will not be appearing with Sarah Palin at a rally in Jeffersonville tonight. But this is of course no reason to think this Maverick is distancing himself from the McCain campaign.

"I'm going by (the Palin rally.) I've got another event scheduled at the same time, but it is close by, so I'm going to go by and spend as long as I can there and hang out in the parking lot and spend some time with the folks standing in line or patiently waiting to get in," Daniels said. "I'm not speaking at the rally, no."

In an interview with KUSA in Colorado, Sarah Palin answered little 3rd grader Brandon's questions about what the Vice President does by saying, "[T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom." Sure she got it wrong, but Maverick that she is, she looked so excited while answering it.

Palin also made a point of mentioning that she loved to visit the "pro-America" areas of the country, of which North Carolina is one. No word on which states she views as unpatriotic.

That's very Maverick.

"God forbid!" Gail Silverberg chimed in. "Hockey moms and lipstick on a pig and six-packs? I don't want that stuff."

Nearby, Rina Jampolsky was wearing a "Hillary Sent Me" button next to a pin saying "Barack Obama" in Hebrew. "I thought I wouldn't vote at all when Hillary left the race," she said. "But as soon as McCain selected Sarah Palin, my decision was made."

Rep. John Lewis has released this statement, comparing the McCain/Palin smears on Barack Obama to the dangerous rhetoric of George Wallace.

George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who only desired to exercise their constitutional rights.

Bill Keller, executive editor of the New York Times says that they reported the Bill Ayers story when they did because the McCain campaign had been pushing them to do it. This contradicts Sarah Palin's claim that she brought it up on the campaign trail because she was "responding to the news of the day." I'm not sure who's more Maverick in this case. The McCain camp for telling the New York Times what to report, or the New York Times for listening to them?
